The Indian Information Service was formed in the year 1959 and was earlier known as Central Information Service (CIS). The IIS Group ‘A’ is an Organized Group ‘A’ Service and the officers in the IIS Group ‘A’ are inducted either by direct recruitment through Civil Services Examination or by promotion from the feeder grade i.e. Senior Grade of US Group ‘B’. The IIS officers look after information, publicily and media related needs of the country and to ensure dissemination of information on policies and programmes of the Central GOvernment to common people through Print, Electronic and Social Media etc.
The basic function is to inform, educate and communicate government views, policies and programs to the masses and collect their feedback for the government. In the present era of transparency, accountability and inclusive growth, it is imperative that the flagship programs are publicized in such a manner to target population to ensure efficient implementation. It is also important to pet feedback from the stakeholders to enable the government to take timely corrective policy measures if necessary. Similarly, there is need to project the country in a much more positive manner to the outer world.
